The Polar Ground-Level Electric Field and Current Variations in Relation to Solar Wind Changes Relation to Solar Wind Changes

The ground-level electric field (Ez)and current (Jz)disturbances recorded at Hornsund are often in concurrence with solar wind induced changes in the agnetosphere-ionosphere (MI)system. In presented individual examples the observed Ez and Jz deviations demonstrate a coincidence in amplitude and phase with MI events indicated separately by supplementary measurements. The amplitude deviations appeared to be much larger than the estimated average departure from mean diurnal variations. In some cases they indicated unusual decreases with obtained negative values. The quiet magnetic condition daily Ez variations, needed for quantitative statistical confirmation of existence of the response to solar wind changes in the examined cases, are illustrated for different seasons.
