Laboratory Study on Nano-particle Formation by Ionization in Air

The experimental system using the drift tube ion mobility/mass spectrometer (DT-IMS/MS) and the cluster-differential mobility analyzer combined with Faraday cup electrometer (C-DMA/FCE) was employed in order to investigate the formation of cluster ions and their growth to nano-particles initiated by ionizations in air. Detailed analysis of mobility and mass spectra of negative cluster ions indicated that the initial stage of the ion-induced nucleation from negative ions produced by α -ray irradiation in the SO2/H2O/Air mixture proceeds in two ways: the increase in the number of H2O molecules attached to SO4 -and HSO4-ions, and the core change reactions from SO4-ions to HSO4-ions.
