Small Ions Concentration In The Air Above Athens,Greece

In Athens - Greece measurements of both positive and negative small ions concentration have been made regularly since 1968 at the National Observatory of Athens (NOA). In this paper the small ions (both positive and negative) concentration has been estimated for a long-term period of 17-years 1968-1984. The results of the study of the small ions and their variations covering this long-term period are presented for first time. The diurnal and annual variations are examined. The concentrations of small (positive and negative)atmospheric ions follow a double diurnal course. The maxima occur at nearly 3-5 a.m. And 13-16 p.m., local time (LT=GMT+2h). The minima are observed at 6-8 a.m. And 21-23 p.m. The annual course of small ions at the NOA presents maximum concentration values around summer period. The mean annual value of small ions concentration for the 17-year period (1968-1984) is n+=187.6 ions/cm 3 for positive ions and n-=150.5 ions/cm 3 for negative ions. The positive to negative ratio (n+/n-) of the mean annual concentrations for the 17-years period is equal to 1.25. The year-to-year variation of the small (positive and negative) ions concentration for the examined period showed a negative trend.
