Characteristics of Discharges Occurred in a Simulated Cloud

In order to understand the initial characteristics of an upward leader, we have performed a study of the discharge which occurred from a grounded electrode in a simulated cloud. The cloud is formed of water vapor which was sprayed from a nozzle of boiled-water tank and charged by induction charging. A grounded electrode was located at various distances from center line of the charged cloud to cause a discharge in the cloud. It was found: (1) the cloud electrification increases with the velocity of water vapor jet; (2) the peak values of discharge current and light intensity depend on the space charge density of the cloud and distance between the charged cloud and the grounded rod electrode.
