ON THE GENERATION AND STABILITY OF CHARGE LAYERS IN MCS STRATIFORM REGIONS
We suggest a quantitative model treating the formation of the positive charge layer near the 0 ℃ isotherm and respective negative layer as a result of melting charging process. Both non-inductive and inductive mechanisms are taken into account, but inductive melting charging of iceaggregates was found more likely to dominate charge generation near the 0 ℃ isotherm. Special attention is paid to incorporation of light ions into the model and account is taken of their interaction with cloud particles through effectively decreasing ion mobility. This has allowed us, in particular, to study the role of light ions in the formation of screening charge layers.
