Characteristics of a positive cloud-to-ground lightning flash observed by high speed video camera
During the Shandong Artificially Triggered Lightning Experiment in Shandong province, East China, one positive cloud-to-ground lightning flash was recorded by a high speed video camera with a time resolution of 1000 frames/s in 2006. The discharge process has been studied in detail by combining the data from fast antenna and slow antenna in this paper. The flash contained only one return stroke and lasted about 990 ms. The luminous time of the positive leader process was about 12 ms. The leader seemed to develop horizontally at the initial stage right out of the thundercloud. The time interval between 26 leader pulses during the last 0.5 ms right before the return stroke was about 17 μ s. The 2-D progressing speed of stepped leader was ranged from 0.1×10 5 m/s to 3.8×10 5 m/s. A long time period of prestroke activity, which lasted about 620 ms, occurred from the beginning of flash to the beginning of return stroke.
