Deterministic Chaos in Electromagnetic Fields Induced by Lightning Discharge
We applied chaos theory to irregular atmospheric signals generated by lightning discharges in a summer thunderstorm. As the atmospheric signals, we measured time series of the induction field’s amplitude using an orthogonal loop antenna (60 cm in diameter, frequency range of 10 kHz to 500 kHz). We plotted various trajectories in m-dimensional phase space and found strange attractors in these trajectories. We estimated the correlation dimension to be 7.6 for the signals of a cloud-to-ground flash and 4.1 for a cloud-to-cloud flash. We also obtained the spectrum of the Lyapunov exponents for reconstructing the embedding trajectory in a three-dimensional phase space vector. It is concluded that a chaotic characteristic exists in the induction field components.
