An Analysis of the Initial Stage of Intracloud Lightning in the Chinese Inland Plateau
Multi-station observation on lightning flashes in the Chinese Inland Plateau area was conducted in the summer of 2004 by using fast antenna, slow antenna and field mill. The high time-resolution GPS was used to synchronize the signals from each station. The result shows that the thunderstorms in Zhong-chuan( Zh-Ch) area were small and weak convective cells with low flash rate and usually occurred from 13:00 to 22:00 LT. With the time of arrival lightning radiation detection system, the initial stage of five in-tracloud( IC) lightning discharges were analyzed in this paper. The results indicate that the radiation sources heights of the initial breakdown ranged from 3 to 5km above ground, starting from the negative charge re-gion in the middle part of the cloud, and developing downward to the lower positive charge region. Com-pared with the simultaneous Doppler radar observations, it is clear that the lightning discharges occurred in the regions of high radar reflectivity ranging from 20dBz to 50dBz.
