Wavelet Based Detection and Fractal Analysis of Radiation Fields by Lightning Return Stroke
Based on slow antenna electrical field change data obtained during the summer of 2002 in Q inghai province, the detection of radiation fields of first return stroke in negative cloud-to-ground lightning discharge and their fractal behaviors were analyzed with wavelet method. It was indicated that the coefficient of variation (Cv) of detail coefficients at the first level of decomposition is appropriate indicators for detection of return stroke. It was also found that radiation field of first return stroke signal showed apparent fractal behavior, the fractal dimensions of radiation field were obtained within the range of 1.1-1.6 with mean of 1.32. A possible relationship of fractal dimension with peak current of return stroke and the charge stored in the stepped leader channel, which is similar to Berger’s formula, was given.
