Statistics Analysis of Characteristics of Continuing Current in CG Lightning over The central Tibetan Plateau
The electric field change measurements with GPS high time resolution in the central Tibetan Plateau were analyzed statistically. The characteristics of continuing current in cloud-to-ground (CG )lightning were discussed. The results indicate that of 342 CG lightning flashes in the central Tibetan Plateau, half is single return stroke ,and positive CG lightning flashes are almost single return stroke ,only 4.2 % of positive CG are multi-stroke flashes, 32.8 % of negative CG lightning flashes is single return stroke,17.5% of the flashes contain continuing current. Of the 60 flashes followed by continuing current, 52 contain a long (greater than 40ms) continuing current and 8 contain a short (10-40ms) continuing current, and 4 single-stroke flashes were followed by short continuing current, 22 single-stroke flashes and 30 multi-stoke flashes were followed by long continuing current; 56.7% of continuing currents occur after the first return stroke, the most of containing continuing current in the multi-stroke flashes are followed by second return stroke. The mean duration of the continuing current is 132.3ms, there is a big disparity on the duration of the continuing current in positive and negative CG lightning flashes, the duration of the continuing current in negative CG lightning flashes is two times higher that in positive CG lightning flashes; There is an inverse relation between the duration of the inter-stroke interval just preceding the interval containing continuing current and the duration of the continuing current.
