The intracloud discharge and the possible charge structure in a thunderstorm in the Chinese Inland Plateau

The intracloud (IC) discharge is closely related to the charge structure of thunderstorm. The location, charge moment and polarity of intracloud discharges have been analyzed by using the electric field change measurements from a 7-sites network of slow antenna system synchronized by GPS with 1 μ s time resolution in the area of Zhongchuan that is located in the Chinese Inland Plateau. Ten IC lightning flashes, occurred in a large storm on August 20, 2004, have been analyzed by using the non-linear least-square solution. The results showed that five IC flashes occurred between the main negative charge region and the upper positive charge region and five between the main negative charge region and the lower positive charge region during the mature stage of the thunderstorm. The center of the discharge was between 1.2km and 5.6km above the ground and the neutralized moment was about 1.1 ~61Ckm. It confirmed that the charge structure of thunderstorm in the Chinese inland plateau is tripole.
