S5-10. HIGH-RESOLUTION WRF SIMULATIONS OF LIGHTNING THREAT

Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission lightning and precipitation observations have confirmed a robust relationship between lightning ash rates and the amount of large precipitating ice hydrometeors in storms. This relationship is exploited using cloud-resolving simulations from the Weather Research and Forecast Model and comparisons with lightning ash data from the North Alabama Lightning Mapping Array, to create gridded, quantitatively calibrated, short-term forecasts of lightning threat. Two prototypical approaches are demonstrated in this research, one using simulated graupel ux in the mixed phase region and another the shape of the simulated re ectivity profile.
