Relationship between lightning activity and precipitation in the Mediterranean

Preliminary analyses of the lightning activity and precipitation over the East and Middle Mediterranean (at 0.25x0.25 degrees grid resolution) during the summer reveal that the number of cases with 3-h accumulated rainfall greater than a chosen threshold was bigger when lightning occurred than when it was absent. Comparisons of diurnal and spatial distributions show that the afternoon flash density peak is associated mainly with lightning over the land, which is in accordance with the results of earlier workers. The early morning flash density peak is associated mainly with flashes over the sea. The analyses also show that there is much less lightning in the early morning hours (with lightning mainly over the sea) in comparison with lightning activity in the early afternoon when lightning occurs mainly over the land. Our results confirm earlier findings that lightning activity over the oceans is much less than over land.
