Preliminary analysis of Characteristics of Summer lightning over the central Lower Latitude Plateau of China
The lightning characteristics of thunderstorms in the summer of 2006 on the central Lower Latitude Plateau of China with an altitude of 1800 m above sea level were studied by using the data from lightning location system and field mill. The preliminary study shows that lightning flashes on the central Lower Latitude Plateau shows typical continental thunderstorm characteristics. The diurnal variation of lightning activity is very prominent, about 88.57% of lightning flashes occur from 12:00 to 22:00LT.There are more thunderstorms on the central Lower Latitude Plateau, and two or three thunderstorms can be observed in a thunderstorm day. The mean cloud-to-ground (CG )flash rate of the thunderstorm is 1.47 fl/min. The polarity of electric field underneath thunderstorm usually shows negative, the so-called end of storm oscillation (EOSO) in which the local electric field exhibits a decaying sinusoidal oscillation about zero as the thunderstorm dies away. Among 6657 observed CG lightning flashes, the ratio of positive ground flash to total flash is very little, just 3.30% in average. The most of CG lightning flashes is single return stroke, about 49.73 % of negative CG lightning flashes just have one return stroke, the positive CG flashes almost produce one return stoke. The largest number of return strokes in a CG flash is 23. CG lightning current can be fitted well to a lognormal distribution, the arithmetic mean and maximum current of positive CG lightning are more higher than that of negative CG flash.
