First Mapping of the Lightning Severity in Belgium
From recorded data of cloud-to-cloud (CC) and cloud-to-ground (CG) discharges on the Belgian territory by the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI), we built the first map of the lightning severity in our country. These data were recorded for the period 2001-2005 by electromagnetic interferometry measurements (SAFIR-VAISALA system). CG discharges were discriminated from each annual map. The accepted value of the keraunic level is generally considered to be 15. By using MATLAB, mean values of Ng were extracted and drawn through a mosaic work of different scales. A critical comparaison of the welknown world formulas giving Ng versus Td is also discussed, leading to a mean value of Ng = 1.2 km -2 .year -1 on the Belgian territory.
