An analysis of climatic characteristics of thunderstorms over the drainage area of Qinghai Lake in China

Located at the northeast verge of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and with the multiform environmental characteristics of ground surface and enough water vapor and heat flux, thunderstorms in the drainage area of Qinghai Lake, where is rather sensitive to climate changes, are frequent from April to October, and especially concentrated in summers. Most of the monthly number of thunderstorms at four sites around Qinghai Lake in the area can be well correlated with the monthly average air temperature and precipitation, and the differences in four sites in the area are not very evident. The highest flash rate density is at the easternmost site. The monthly number of lightning flashes in the majority of the area can well be correlated with the monthly average air temperature but not with monthly precipitation at four sites, and in particular its evolution in eight years from 1995 to 2002 relates well to the climate extreme-El Ni(n)o.
