Lightning behavior with respect to altitude variations at Rio Grande do Sul (South of Brazil) based on data of the Brazilian Lightning Detection Network

The first data obtained by the Brazilian Lightning Detection Network at Rio Grande do Sul, a State in the South of the country, will be presented. The state cover partially the region with highest lightning activity in the South America continent, as observed by the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS), associated with the frequent occurrence of large Mesoscale Convective Systems. The network is a result of collaboration among different power companies and research institutions and was designed to provide lightning data for several applications. It is composed by five IMPACT-ESP sensors installed with a baseline of about 200 km inside the state, which are integrated to the Brazilian Lightning Detection Network that covers the complete South region of Brazil. For this study, a data base of georreferenced information about altitude variations of the region will be analyzed, looking for relationships with the lightning characteristics measured by the network like polarity and peak current. Maps and histograms will be presented to give a spatial distribution of lightning and relationships with the relief in the region. For this, it will be used a dataset of about one and a half year, from the beginning of 2005 to the middle of 2006. Finally, the results will be compared to LIS data obtained in the same period in order to verify possible similarities and/or differences.
