Analysis of thunderstorm sysytems and lightning activity associated with sprites observed during the Eurosprite campaing:2-Case studies

A large number of sprites were observed, mainly over France, during the summers of 2003,2005,and 2006.The structure, the life cycle and the lightning actvity of storms produing sprites have been and lyzed by using data from the national meteorgical radar networks, from Meteosat and from lithting dection networks. The cloud to groud(CG)lingtning activity fo sprite-producing storms from analyzedd at the time scale of its lifetime and at that of the second aroud the sprite. As over the Great Plains of the US,the observed sprites were mostly produced by small to large convective sysytems in stratform precipitation areas with low flash rates and a high postive CG propotion. The sprite production rate could be high ,up to 3sprites in 5minutes.Sprites tended to strat to occur or to become more frepuent when and differnet parts of the stratifrom area, suggestive of large horizontal discharfges known as spider ligtning.
