Q Bursts from Various Distances on the Earth
Mechanism of Q burst production has been studied. ELF to VLF electric fields were observed in Kochi City, Japan. Q bursts were detected and analyzed in time and frequency domains; waveforms, spectra, and spectrograms were examined. It is found that the Q bursts are classified into four different types; V, W, double V, and delayed W. The V type Q bursts originate from lightning strokes occurring in distances of 19-20 Mm from an observing station, the W type in 17-19 Mm, the double V type in 6-17 Mm, and the delayed W type in 2-6 Mm. It is proved by examination of some hundred Q bursts that they are produced by combination of the direct waves with the antipodal waves arriving at the observation site successively from the source lightning strokes on the Earth.
