Three-dimensional VHF Observations Using AdvancedVHF Broadband Digital Interferometer
Lightning Research Group of Osaka University (LRG-OU) has been improving the VHF broadband digital interferometer (DITF) for thunderstorm observations. The advanced VHF broadband DITFs enable us to locate the impulsive VHF radiation sources caused by lightning discharges with high resolution in three-dimension. As a result of the three-dimensional VHF observations conducted during the ’06-’07 monsoon season in Darwin, Australia, a new type of leader progressions in thunderclouds is found. In some cloud-to-cloud (CC) lightning flashes, the first leader followed by subsequent leaders with hundreds milliseconds interval is noticeable. Considering the channels and their developing velocities of the first and subsequent leaders, it is understood phenomenologically that these CC flashes correspond to multiple strokes in case of cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes. 70 CC flashes with “multiple CC strokes are recorded in this campaign.
