Improvements to the detection efficiency model for the Brazilian lightning detection network
Recent improvements to previous relative detection efficiency (DE) model were implemented to provide more accurate information about the DE of the Brazilian lightning detection network (BrasilDAT). The new model provides a better response compared to previous models since basically it takes into account the two different types of sensors (LPATS x IMPACT) and neglects the sensors that are essential to the solution, thus avoiding the fake enhancement of the local DE, particularly near the network boundaries. The DE values are calculated based on a large amount of data provided by the own network to generate the probability distribution curves for each sensor separately. The curves can be associated to other virtual sensors in order to simulate the DE over other regions not actually covered by a lightning detection network. The comparison to previous results revealed that the improvements really have enhanced the model sensitivity and allowed it provide more accurate results, particularly near the sensor network boundaries.
