A 3-D Location System of Lightning VHF Radiation Pulses and Preliminary Observation Results

A new developed 3-D Location System of Lightning VHF Radiation Pulses (LLR), which firstly operated in Pingliang area of Gansu province in China in the summer of 2006, was introduced. The LLR is a highly precise GPS-Based system, working at 123MHz-129MHz and 267MHz-273MHz , and detecting lightning activity in a range of 150 km. The GPS clock precision is better than ±25 ns, and the synchronization precision of the whole system is better than ±50 ns. The system consists of one center station and five sub-stations. The network is in an approximate form of a parallelogram with extents of about 29 km in east-west and 15 km in north-south. The distance between any two stations ranges from 7km to 15km. The preliminary location results show that the pulses location were in good agreement with the strong echo area of radar. The preliminary location results and its comparison with echoes of a dual-polarization Doppler radar will be presented in the paper.
