The Response Time Test of Low-voltage Lightning Protection Components

The definition and test method of the response time toward low-voltage lightning protection components, such as gas discharge tube (GDT), metal oxide varistors (MOV) and transient voltage suppressors (TVS), haven’t been unified until now. IEC61643-321 defined the response time of avalanche breakdown diode (ABD) which indicates its capability to respond to the transient overvoltage. Therefore, in order to enable the response capability of various lightning protection components to be comparable on the same test platform, rectangle pulse generator with the rise time of 1ns was chosen as the test components, the definition of ABD’s response time by IEC61643-321 was applied.By testing the response time and analyzing the response characteristics of GDT, MOV and TVS, the proposed test method is proved to be effective.
