An analysis of the lightning strike disaster of large-size oil tanks in Yizheng & a recommended protection method

The large-size oil tanks, located at Yizheng Oil Delivery Station in Yangzhou, were struck by stormy lightning on Aug. 7, 2006. With reference to the reflectivity factor characteristics recorded in the course of the stormy lightning of the Doppler weather radar and the lightning position indicators, we made an analysis of the lightning strikes and the radar echoing, and we found out the cause for the oil tank fire disaster arising from the lightning strike. The following are the study results: The strong electric current echo of 55dBz and the cloud top height of 14km are the very important prerequisite for generating the lightning; the lightning was recorded for 13 tines within an area 1km away from the oil tanks; the accumulated electric charge has a strength of 20~50kA. All these are the direct cause for this disaster. The lightning current is an impulse current; the inductance and the resistance of the conductor wires generate a high voltage at the time when the lightning current passes through the conductors; it is due to this high voltage that a flashover is generated at the airtight seal between the oil tank body and its floating roof. And it is just this flashover that brings about a fire disaster of the oil tanks. In order to reduce the occurrence of lightning strike disasters, protection proposals were worked out.

Radar lightning positioning impulse curren t lightning strike disaster lightning protection.
