DEVELOPMENT OF AN ADVANCED RHEO-DIECASTING TECHNIQUE BASED ON H-NCM

In order to extend the practical application of semi- solid forming processes, a number of forming processes have been developed based on rheocasting route. Some of them are being used to produce aluminum and magnesium automotive casting parts. However, the commercialization of those processes is still in the initial stage because of low efficiency in cost and productivity. In this paper, an Advanced Rheo-diecasting Technique (ART), which is an integrated mass production system based on the H-NCM (Hong-NanoCasting Method) for slurry making developed recently at Yonsei University, is introduced. The present system has now been put into the stage of commercial production in Korea and Japan. In the H-NCM, the semisolid slurry production is based on the nucleation method, in which the nuclei of primary a phase formed in the melt are prevented to grow into dendrites, instead they grow into fine globular particles to become semisolid slurry having rheological behavior. By increasing the number of nuclei, very fine and uniform globular microstructures can be obtained, resulting in an increase of mechanical properties.
