MULTI OBJECTIVE OPTIMIZATION OF PLUNGER SPEED USING CRITERION FOR COLD SHUT IN DIE CASTING

Mould-filling simulation has been used in foundries for predicting casting defects 15. However, the optimization of gating designs and casting conditions for decreasing the casting defects is one of the most difficult and important problems in foundries. In this study, we proposed a criterion for quantitatively estimating casting defects caused by cold shut, which causes a drop in casting quality. We applied the proposed criterion to a multi objective optimization problem to control injection speed to suppress casting defect occurrence. As a result, we obtained a pareto-Set, which is a set of various effective solutions, using a genetic algorithm. It was confirmed that the distribution of the evaluation index of cold shut can predict the position of cold shut in cavities. Furthermore, we experimentally produced castings using the optimized injection speed curve. From the comparison between numerical and experimental results, it was confirmed that the proposed criterion can be used to predict the positionof cold shut in cavities, and it was considered that the possibility of cold shutoccurrence can be qualitatively estimated using the proposed criterion in die casting simulation.
