SIMULATION OF THERMAL STRESSES AND HOT CRACK IN THE HEAVY INGOT MOULD DURING SOLIDIFICATION PROCESS
In this paper, the transient heat transfer and thermal stress evolution of 310t heavy gray iron ingot mould with variable cross-section in the casting process was calculated by solving a coupled set of governing differential equations for mass, energy and mechanical balance by the finite element method, using commercial software, ProCast. The simulation results showed that initial positions of cracks lay in the subsurface of the inwall of the mould at the early stage of the casting process. An optimized design was proposed and the simulation results indicated that the optimized mould has a lower crack-sensitivity.
