PREDICTION AND REDUCTION OF INCLUSION DEFECTS IN STEEL CASTINGS BY A CAE SYSTEM
Inclusion defects such as entrapment of mold sand and slag are often found in castings and are not easy to prevent, because it is difficult to identify the place where such inclusions are entrapped. This paper presents a practical application of a CAE to estimate and improve the inclusion defects in steel castings used in construction machine. In the CAE, particles such as mold sand and slag are generated as markers at various places in the mold and tracked during mold filling by considering the buoyancy effect. The final positions of the markers are compared with observed defects and countermeasures are taken to reduce the defects.
