Synthesis and Thermal Properties of Amine Salts of 3-Nitro-1,2, 4-Triazol-5-one

Four amine salts of 3-nitro-1, 2, 4-triazol-5-one (NTO) have been prepared from inexpensive raw materials. The ethylenediamine, hydrazine, and ammonium salts of NTO were synthesized by mixing a solution of NTO with ethylenediamine, hydrazine hydrate, and ammonium carbonate, respectively. The hydroxylammonium salt of NTO was achieved in two steps comprising reacting aqueous solution of NTO with NaOH, then with hydroxylammonium chloride. The experiments were carried out at room temperature. Pure salt compounds were obtained by recrystallization of the crude material from water/ethanol solution. The structures of compounds were confirmed by IR, 13C NMR and elemental analyses. Thermal properties of four amine salts of NTO were studied by DSC-TG, VST and thermal explosion test. Thermal stability of ethylenediamine salt is superior to hydroxylammonium salt and hydrazine salt, and ammonium salts is bad.
