Studies on Low Vulnerable Cast PBXs

The present paper reports the work carried out on RDX/HMX based cast PBXs with HTPB binder. The cast compositions were evaluated for sensitivity and performance. RDX/HTPB and HMX/HTPB based compositions were subjected to evaluation to generate data on VOD. Compositions with VOD close to those of RDX/HMX and TNT based compositions were realized. They were found less vulnerable than TNT based formulations in impact and friction sensitivities despite equivalent performance. The work was also extended for aluminised PBXs and data was generated for air blast and underwater parameters were determined for selected composition. The performance of aluminised composition was compared with that of conventionally used Dentex and HBX compositions. Thermal analysis data was generated for the compositions to assess decomposition pattern and compatibility
