Studies of DMDNB Compatibility

DMDNB is widely used as a detection agent of plastic bonded explosives and is prefered due to good compatibility and toxicity properties compare to another recommended detection agents. Each component of multicomponental mixture as plastic explosive is, brings posibilities of thermal stability decreasing The conventional methods of thermal stability determination are caried out in temperature interval between 60-120℃. However the explosive mass can be localy overheated on higher temperature due to mechanical processing. It is therefore necessary to know the pure DMDNB properties and the properties of its mixtures with other components of manufactured explosive at elevated temperature interval. The purpose of this work is to explore the reactivity of DMDNB with secondary explosives which are typically used in plastic explosives i.e. hexogene (RDX), octogene (HMX) nad pentrite (PETN) by simultaneous DTA/FTIR method. The explosive mass can contain the detecting agent up to several percent in various stages of manufacture. The rise of recommended content of DMDNB can be assumed due to its high loss during storage and processing. The tendency to mark up the other non-plastic commercial and military explosives can be assumed because of rising the safety against terrorist attack. These explosives are usually based on trinitrotoluene (TNT) and ammonium nitrate (AN). The compatibility of DMDNB with these two substances was therefore also explored.
