Investigations on the Mechanism of Nitration of Tetraacetyldiformylhexaazaisowurtzitane

Specimens (I, II) of hexanitrohexaazaisowurzitane (HNIW) by the nitrolysis of tetraacetydiformylhexaazaisowurtzitane (TADFIW) in the system of nitric-vitriol acid and hydrolysis- nitration were synthesized. By column chromatography methods, two kinds of different nitration by-products from the two systems were isolated. These by-products in specimen I were identified as monoformylpentanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (MFPNIW) and diformyltetranitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (DFTNIW) by FTTR, MS(CI) and elemental analysis. In the same way, these by-products in specimen II were identified as monoacetylpenanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (MAPNIW) and diacetyltetranitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (DATNIW). It is shown that the reaction mechanisms of nitrolysis of TADFIW in the system of nitric-vitriol acid and hydrolysis-nitration are different.
