Large Diameter Plane Wave Lens Made from Non-Ideal Explosives
There are some experimental data that can best be collected by using a planar shock wave. One particular set of useful data might be the data providing the run to detonation for an explosive formulation. For non-ideal explosives that have much slower energy release rates than ideal explosives the run to detonation can become very long. This requires a larger diameter plane wave lens to generate the planar shock wave. With increased diameter a conical plane wave lens experiences greatly increased overall weight making a large diameter plane wave lens difficult to make and handle safely. A means of reducing the required weight of explosives in a large diameter plane wave lens has been devised and tested. This presentation presents the new, large diameter, plane wave lens design and describes how it was constructed and tested using a non-ideal ammonium nitrate emulsion explosive.
