Static Firing of Tandem Warheads-Movements Induced by Precursor Charge Blast

Tandem warheads are a remedy to the threats of reactive armor as they employ a two stage strategy for defeating them. The EFP/Jet produced by precursor charge detonates/penetrates the ERA module of the reactive armor and the main charge jet then penetrates the tank. When it is dynamically fired, the momentum it carries with it, is sufficient to compensate for any transmitted movements induced by the precursor stage explosive blast pressure and therefore one only has to consider the effects of flying debris of ERA and of the precursor it self. For statically testing a tandem warhead, the movement of the warhead from blast pressure induced by the precursor charge should be considered as a perturbation to warheads performance. In this paper, using Autodyn 2D and 3D simulations, we tested a Tandem warhead to check this aspect. The results showed that a tandem warhead designer should take care of the warhead movements during static firing which can produce misleading results during static firings.
