Directional Effects of Explosions in One-sided Open Cubical Structures

Explosion of High Explosive material or of ammunition in free atmosphere results in the formation of a symmetrically diverging blast wave which decays as it propagates outwards from the point of explosion. It undergoes alteration in its characteristics as it interacts with reflecting surfaces. If the explosion is conducted in a one-sided open cubical structure, the blast wave undergoes multiple reflections and results in the formation of a highly asymmetric diverging blast wave around the structure. The directional effects of explosions in one-sided open cubical structure were studied by conducting experimental trials with high explosives and ammunitions. The blast parameters of the explosions with equivalent charge weights from 120g to a few thousand kg of TNT detonated in a one-sided open cubical structure were recorded using piezoelectric gauges at identical scaled distances in different directions around the structure. An attempt has also been made to develop correlation to estimate the directional effects of blast in the near region in different directions of a partially vented explosion in a cubical structure.
