Comparison of Sound Pressure Level of Lethal and Less Lethal Type of Ammunition
Riot Control Less lethal type ammunition has been developed for use to control the unruly mob. Instrumented trials were conducted to compare the sound pressure levels of lethal and less lethal type of ammunition at identical distances from point of firing. The time varying sound-pressure profile and its frequency contents of lethal and less lethal type of ammunition have been monitored using high resolution system (Blast mate III Instantel make). Different types of ammunition like ball type, plastic type, AP shot (lethal type) have been fired using 7.62mm and 0.303 rifles. The resulting Sound Pressure Level (SPL) has been recorded at a distance of 13.5m, 15m, 50m & 100m with reference to guns. The paper presents a systematic study of variation of sound-pressure profile, its frequency contents as a function of distance from the point of burst. The paper also compares the peak sound pressure level of lethal and less lethal type of ammunitions at identical distances. Correlations have been developed in terms of sound-pressure levels and radial distance for lethal and less lethal ammunitions.
