New Aspects of Gun Propellant Combustion

The combustion mechanism of propellants in guns and closed vessels seems to be very well known. However, during the last years, , some new discoveries concerning the burning of propellants have been made. For some propellants burned in closed vessels, unexpected measurement results have been obtained. These results do not match with the propellant grain geometry. At the beginning of the burning process the dynamic vivacity shows excessive high values. Sometimes that effect lasts until 50% of the charge is burned. This accelerated combustion in connection with an intensified gas generation was particular observed at low loading densities and low temperatures. To dimension a propellant for gun ammunition the knowledge of the burning behaviour and the burning rate respectively is very important, not only for the prediction of the efficiency of the propellant but also for ammunition safety purposes. For this reason, systematic experimental and theoretical studies were performed. These investigations, conducted by WTD 91, showed that the observed intensified combustion is very often directly related to gas-dynamic oscillations generated inside the propellant grain perforations . It was shown that, besides the well known Vieille oscillations, other types of pressure oscillations are induced in closed vessels by burning propellants. The properties of these pressure oscillations are determined by the geometry of the gun propellants. The amplitudes of these oscillations depend on the propellant temperature and the loading densities. Details of the mechanism and the effect of the pressure oscillations on the combustion were obtained from geometrical measurements on grains after interrupted burning.
