Application of Grafted Ferrocene in Solid Propellant

In this paper, ferrocene grafted (JZ) with a kind of crosslinkable burning rate catalyst was used to replace part or all of the binder in composite propellant. It is found that as the contents ofJZ increases, the burning rate gets higher, the pressure exponent gets lower, but the mechanical properties of the propellant decreased, especially the low temperature elongation rate; A blank formula of propellant was specially prepared free of other volatile components, and the volatility of JZ (ferrocene grafted with crosslinkable burning rate catalyst) and T27 (octyl-ferrocene) in solid propellant was studied using Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA). By comparative study on propellant formula with 4% JZ and propellant formula with 3% T27, it shows that The burning rate catalytic efficiency of JZ is slightly lower than that of T27. The content of T27 in propellant was reduced from 3% to 0.86% after more than 9 months in store under temperature 70C; the weight loss of propellant with 4% JZ was found to be nearly zeo after the same period of time and under the same temperature. This indicates that JZ is much less volatile and migratable than T27, so by using JZ as a burning rate catalyst in high burning rate solid propellant with heavy loading of burning rate catalyst, the above problems can be solved completely.
