Small Area and Short-duration Pulse Shock Initiation of Primary High Explosives

Based on the expeimental apparatus of electrical exploding driving small-scale slapper with high performances established by us, the technology of laser interference, VISAR(Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflectors) was used to measure the velocity of small-scale slapper driven by electrical explosion of metallic copper foil. The flying regulars of the slappers were gained. According to the regulars and the DRM(Delayed Robbins-Monro) test procedure, the small area and short-duration pulse shock initiation of primary high explosives HNS-VI, nanometer TATB/B-II and micrometer TATB/B-I were studied, and the shock initiation thresholds in the condition of 50% initiation probability were achieved. The experimental results show that the particle sizes are finer, the shock initiation thresholds are less and the sensitivities are higher, which can be explained well in theory according to the two-stage theory of hot spots ignition and detonation development for heterogeneous explosives. The experimental resuls can provide guides to design safe and low-energy exploding foil initiators.
