Algorithm for Constructing Blast Vulnerability Envelopes for Aircraft
A computerized procedure for constructing blast vulnerability envelopes for aircraft is designed. First, the original aircraft geometrical model is built from the FEA software. Then, the lethal radius of each aircraft quadrilateral finite element is determined. In the following, circle scanning method is proposed to determine the discrete points of the envelope. At last, the vulnerability envelopes can be drawn by sequentially connecting all the discrete points or curve fitting. Three examples are given to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed algorithm. Analysis shows that: (1) the proposed algorism is very general and easy to be programmed, and has considered many factors such as detonation height, charge type, and charge weight; and (2) the drawn envelopes are useful to intuitively assess the vulnerability of aircraft subjected to blast wave and may provide valuable advises on the aircraft vulnerability reduction design in an effort to enhance the overall aircraft survivability in the aircraft concptual design.
