Overview of RCC Dams at the End of 2006
At the end of 2006 there were over 380 large (>15m in height) RCC dams either complete or under construction throughout the World. A significant proportion of these dams are in Asia, in particular in China. The first RCC dam over 200m in height (Longtan in China) is nearing completion and this will be followed by a further two or three RCC dams of a similar height within the next few years. There is now complete confidence in well-designed RCC dams of any height. The paper describes the distribution of RCC dams around the World, from the still-developing to the more-developed countries, from the hottest to the coldest regions and from areas with negligible rainfall to areas with high rainfall. The paper also includes a discussion of the design philosophies and construction methodologies of RCC dams together with the pozzolans that are being used. The paper will conclude that although there are still differences in the way RCC dams are designed and constructed, the great majority are now being constructed using similar design philosophies that enable the dams to be built very rapidly and very economically.
