Scenario of RCC Dams in Pakistan, Selection of RCC Dam for Bunji Hydropower Project (a Case Study)
Achieving socioeconomic development and sustainable economic growth is one of die greatest challenges Pakistan faces at the start of 21st century. This challenge is most significant in water and power, as both are equally essential elements for sustainable economic growth of the country. Indus River System (IRS) provides more man 80 percent of the water used for irrigation and hydropower generation of the country. Economy of Pakistan is dependent on die waters of IRS. Its true that Indus has not enough water without dams because 88% of water flows through Indus in 70 to 90 days of year between June to September. Presently Pakistan has 71 large dams but none of me dam is Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC). After feasibility studies 2 RCC dam one Diamer Basha Dam 270m and 180m high dam proposed for Bunji Hydropower Project (BHPP) on Indus River. Bunji Hydropower Project is located in the Northern Areas on Indus River in districts Gilgit and Sakurdu. The Project has me installed capacity of 5458 MW and will produce 21 billion units of cheap electricity annually with die design discharge of 1, 500m3/s by utilizing net head of 405m by constructing 180m high RCC dam. This paper high lights die selection of dam type for Bunji HPP by comparing different dam types. The selection of dam type is based on over riding dam safety considerations, technical factors, ease of construction and cost. It is found mat RCC dam is me best option for the development of BHPP.
