Simulation Design and New Structure of RCC Arch Dam

Roller compacted concrete arch dam (RCCAD) is a newly developed type of dam during recent 30 years. It has strong overload ability with less engineering quantities for its arch structure. Less cement and less heat of hydration will generated by roller compacted concrete. Less preparation works of concrete block are necessary for its large placing area. So the technology of rapid construction is obtained. The actual simulating design is proposed based on theoretical research works for many years. Two RCC arch dams have been completed successfully, namely Xibing RCC thin arch dam in Fujian province and Shimenai RCC arch dam in Xinjiang autonomous region. Three kinds of new structures were developed in order to release the stresses and were verified in above-mentioned RCC arch dam. Firstly, the artificial joints were induced for thermal and hydraulic stress release. Secondly, the hinge arch was used for early impounding before grouting transverse joint. And finally, the flexible arch was introduced for coordinating deformation of arch dam and weak rock foundation without stress deterioration. Also the rationality of the new structure is approved by real engineering.
