Application of MgO Content to RCC Arch Dam

Applications and technology development of the construction of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) dam with MgO-mixed micro-expansion concrete in China are introduced. Simulation analysis methods and measures to prevent cracks of dam are also raised based on expansive properties and mathematic models for MgO concrete. Steps for making the crack-prevent scheme are given by taking Yujianhe arch dam as an example. Some main conclusions can be drawn from the paper: (1) The expansion brought by MgO is conducive to compensating tensile stresses which are caused by temperature lowering contraction. It can be part of thermal control methods by using MgO concrete in arch dam and constraint region in gravity dam, in order to prevent cracks; (2) When the MgO content of the concrete under the limitation of 5%, nearly 100℃ expansion amount can be provided by using concrete with an additive of lightly burnt MgO, for compensate shrinkage due to temperature lowering as much as 10℃; (3) In order to prevent cracks in dams in high arch dam and concrete blocks in a constraint region in gravity dam, it has to apply MgO-mixed concrete combined with contraction joints and induced joints scheme. The amount of MgO and the corresponding measures should be determined by analyses of the simulation and experiments.
