The Dinh Binh RCC Dam in Vietnam
The Dinh Binh dam (Hmax = 54. 3m, L= 571m), located in the Binh Dinh province (Vietnam), is the main structure of a multipurpose scheme (mainly protection against floods, irrigation and hydropower). It was designed originally as a traditional gravity dam but was changed partially in a RCC dam in 2003 in order to allow the local contractors to experiment, on a relatively small dam, some techniques already used abroad but new for Vietnam. It was then necessary to review the design as the dam is a relatively complex work, with several large openings at different levels which are not favourable for the RCC placement. The paper describes the different problems encountered during the dam design and construction: (1) The changes between the initial and the revised designs (zoning of the cross section, temporary diversion, location of the bottom gallery, design of the penstock, etc. ); (2) The study of the RCC materials, in particular the use of different types of fly ash available in the country; (3) The thermal analysis which shows that it is possible to avoid, in this case, the expensive cooling of the materials, although the high temperature of the site, if some precautions are adopted during the dam construction, such as use of low heat cement and set retarder, RCC placement only during the night, protection of aggregates in stock piles from the sun, water spraying on setting RCC, etc.; (4) The apparition of some cracks in the conventional concrete of the upstream face due to its thickness and the too large space between the vertical joints. These cracks were caulked externally by a synthetic resin and grouted by cement. It is foreseen that the scheme will be completely achieved at the end of 2007, with the powerhouse operating as soon as the beginning of the rainy season (September 2007). The design and construction of the Dinh Binh dam will certainly be profitable for the RCC technique in Vietnam as some foreign (mainly Chinese) methods were successfully tested and applied, and some recommendations for the future RCC dams suggested.
