Trial Mix Programmes and Full-scale Trials for Yeywa Hydropower Project, Myanmar

Due to the size and importance of the Yeywa HPP and the fact that it was the first RCC dam in Myanmar and would utilise a natural pozzolan that had never been used in concrete before, a very extensive series of trial mix programmes was undertaken. In addition three full-scale trials were completed prior to the start of the RCC placement in the dam body. The trial mix programme was split into two Stages. The objective of the first Stage was to assess the performance of the various cementitious materials and the objectives of the second Stage were to finalise the design of the RCC and the levelling concrete and to choose the admixture. The original plan was to have two full-scale trials, the first to demonstrate to the Owner (DHP) the methodology being proposed for Yeywa dam, to investigate the fresh and hardened properties of the RCC and to train the DHP staff who constructed the trial and were to supervise the construction. The second trial was to refine the construction procedures, to train the Contractors staff and operatives and to make the final choice of set- retarding admixture. Extensive coring was planned for both trials. In the event a third trial had to be undertaken because the award of the Contract for construction was delayed and the second trial was constructed with DHP operatives not the Contractors. The third trial was used primarily to train the Contractors staff and operatives (and to trial the Contractors proposed formwork). This trial was conducted just before the start of construction of the dam. A very detailed analysis was made of the in- situ properties of the first two trials.
