Laboratory Mixture Proportions and Preliminar Design for the Zapotillo Gravity Dam, Mexico
The Zapotillo Gravity Dam will be located at the state of Jalisco, Mexico, in the Rio Verde. The purpose is to storage water that is needed at the city of Leon, Guanajuato, due to The shortage of water supply. The rolled compacted concrete dam (RCCD) option is the subject of this paper. The RCCD would have about 80m height and 220m crest length. The paper describes the laboratory procedures for selecting the mixture proportions, including the locating, study and selection of banks for aggregates, the design of mixtures, the results of the testing of fresh and hardened RCC, and the analysis of data in order to obtain the optimum water content, the design density and the minimum density for construction specifications, as well as the strength parameters for designing the dam. It is also described the preliminary design of the dam, in which the impermeability needs were considered at different levels, so the cement contents were established. The geometry for the dam was designed with the spillway in the middle section, controlled by 6 gates, In order to calculate the slope of the gravity and the spillway sections of the dam, the internal friction angle of the RCC was established, considering 3 months for the filling of the reservoir. Other considerations were the drainage system, the construction methods, the dimension needed for the top of the dam, etc. Finally, the paper describes the stability analysis in both, gravity and spillway sections, for the 3 load combinations considered by the USBR and the results.
