Plans for the Construction of La Brena II Dam in Spain
La Brena II RCC straight gravity dam on the Guadiato River, very close to Cordoba city in southern Spain, will be the largest European RCC dam when it will be completed with 119m in height and 1.4×106m3 of RCC volume out of a total of 1.6×106m3 of concrete. The Project is at a very early stage of RCC placement at the moment of writing this paper. One of the main difficulties of the Project is that the dam body has to be built only some 100m downstream of the existing 54m high La Brena I concrete curved gravity dam, and without disturbing the normal operation of it and its related hydropower plant. The paper reviews the design, the construction layout planned, describing the diverse and very important plant implemented, as well as various previous activities of fundamental importance for the Project, including the complex river diversion scheme adopted due to the existing dam, the spillways scale model study, and the RCC full-scale trial. The benefits obtained from the last two are particularly stated.
