Vertical Vibration Roller For Rapid Construction of RCC Dams

In October 2006, a vertical vibration roller, model SD451 weighing 11 tons was tested on 100 cm thick lift of RCC for the first time in China. This was also the first application of the vertical vibration roller outside of Japan. In China, faster construction of RCC dams has been one of the serious concerns to meet the strong social demand for electricity in industrial and urban cities. It is verified that mechanical quantities of RCC mix such as density, compressive strength, etc., achieved by this roller met the required level after only 8 vibratory roller passes. Information on the test results will be reported in another paper at this symposium. The first vertical vibration roller, model SD450 weighing 10 tons was developed in 1990 by Sakai Heavy Industries Ltd., as a compactor for RCC dams in Japan. It has been used to compact thick lifts, between 75 and 100 cm of RCC, reducing the time and the cost for RCC dam construction while maintaining quality. This paper is based on a study of available literature and information on the vertical vibration roller: (1) Features of the vertical vibration system;(2) Award of Certification of Construction Technology evaluated by the Japan Construction Method and Machinery Research Institute;(3) Comparison of the vertical vibration roller with a conventional vibratory roller;(4) Finishing rollers such as pneumatic tire roller and nutation (or oscilatory) roller to shorten surface treatment time. such as green cutting and cleaning for good bonding;(5) New attempt for continuous thin (40 cm) lift placement using the vertical vibration roller conducted recently in Japan. It is concluded that the performance of the vertical vibration roller has been verified during construction of many RCC dams in Japan. It has been shown that the roller can increase the speed of construction and at the same time improve quality.
