Innovative Monitoring Devices for an Integral Observation of Thermal Stress Behaviour of Large RCC Dams

Some aspects of the thermal stress and thermally induced cracking behaviour of large RCC dams could not be investigated in-situ yet, due to the unavailability of suitable monitoring systems. This particularly relates to the not yet completely investigated formation of longitudinal mass cracking and the unfailing detection of transverse cracks. An innovative, integral monitoring system for the observation of detailed thermal stress behaviour of large RCC dams is presented in this paper. Such instrumentation system consists of Distributed Fibre Optic Temperature Measurements (DFOT) for high information temperature and temperature gradients monitoring as well as in-situ thermal properties determination, suitable stressmeters for the realistic stress monitoring of concrete during its hardening and Distributed Fibre Optic Strain and Temperature Measurements (DFOST) to sense cracks in an RCC mass.
